GDR #5

In the play the Death of a Salesman, Charley tries to explain to Willy that you cannot sell a name. Willy was trying to tell Charley, that he had given the name to Howard when he was born. As if it mattered in some way, that Howard owed him something.  All along, Willy really was not doing a good job for the company anymore and had not in a while. I feel Willy was not getting anything Howard or Charley was trying to tell him. In a world where business seems to be about making the money and making a company profit, it really does not matter who you know, but how you are a benefit to the corporate world. I would think it is fairly the same in 2012 as it was in the 40’s. Possibly in the 40’s people cared more about how they performed for an industry then they do now. Sometimes I feel now a day’s people are out for the all mighty dollar, and they could care less how the company is doing, as long as they are pulling in a paycheck. Willy felt he was doing well, but like I said Howard told him he was not doing well for some time. If you make the company money, you will be an asset to that company. On the other hand, if you do not produce for a business, they have the right to let you go. I also think that the ways the times are today, people are struggling just to have jobs or stay on top of the ones they do have. It might be more of a cutthroat way of working in 2012 then back in the olden days. People seemed to care more for a job well done and providing for the company and their self in the 40’s then now.
